[Fantastic memories] Nipsey Hussle Ownership is everything own your mind mind your own t-shirt

As the streets of Los Angeles mourn the death of Nipsey Hussle, many more people mourn the death of others who've succumbed to the notorious streets of South Los Angeles. For example, my cousin Larry Jr. was gunned down the day after Nipsey. Tears are falling from cheeks because loved-ones will be missed and promising lives have been cut short. But the absent don't have to be missed; they can live on in the hearts and minds of the people for as longs as we live on. And living a short life isn't always unfortunate. Too often we are so concerned with the passing of time that we fail to understand the purpose of it. With that said, let's not get too depressed and disgruntled by the early deaths, and instead let's focus on the purpose of the lives and the deaths. Indeed, death can be as sweet as life--if we give meaning to it.

Take Nipsey, a legend indeed. A young ambitious Crip who had a vision that transcends what our culture has stood for. A man raised in a culture of senseless violence and revenge, yet he was able to dream of more and ambitiously dedicate himself bringing that dream to fruition not only for himself but, more importantly, for our community. He promoted peace, education, intellect, and financial wealth to a community of people who were in dire need of such inspiration and guidance. The streets love him. The industry love him. Entertainers love him. Entrepreneurs believed in him and were willing to invest in him and his vision. Even cops loved him.

What does all of this have to do with the beauty in his early death? To many people around the world, he was just another gangster rapper--they didn't know him beyond the blue bandana and Chuck Taylor's. They didn't know the benevolent, loving character behind the image they had of him. In fact, they didn't believe a Crip from South Los Angeles had the capacity to dream and exhibit such compassion. But now that he is dead at 33 (the same age Jesus died), his character is placed before the world. His death has given the world a new and better look into the hearts and minds of young black men whom they misperceived as lost causes. Nipsey's character, as revealed in his death, has given the world reason to believe in other young black men from the hood. So instead of being sad, look at the bright side and invite the world to invest in the thousands of other Nipsey's buried in the hood.
